The Vampire Lovers (1970) feat. Mary Beth McAndrews - Horror Queers

The Vampire Lovers (1970) feat. Mary Beth McAndrews

Released on 09/30/2020

On this week's episode, we're making our first foray into Hammer Horror with a journey to 19th century Styria in Roy Ward Baker's The Vampire Lovers. Joining us for the discussion is Scarred for Life co-host Mary Beth McAndrews, who brings her own passion for vampires to the episode. After a brief crash course on Hammer Horror, we'll laud the performances of Ingrid Pitt as the thrice-named anti-heroic vampire Marcilla/Carmilla/Mircalla, marvel at the unusual vampire lore (shrouds?!), and lament the lack of any interesting male characters (though that is undoubtedly the point). Plus, Mary Beth leads us in a frank discussion of bisexuality and the vampire sub-genre's relationship to it, which isn't too shocking considering this film is sexy af. Questions? Comments? Snark? Showgirls (1995) feat. Nay Bever - Horror Queers

Showgirls (1995) feat. Nay Bever

Released on 09/23/2020

This week on the pod, we're celebrating the 25th anniversary of (decidedly NOT a horror film) Showgirls. Along for the road trip to Vegas is Attack of the Queerwolf co-host Nay Bever, who delivers both laughs and insightful commentary. This probably isn't the episode you're expecting: sure we poke fun at the film's ridiculous elements, but we spend most of our time discussing the film's many terrible men, analyze the success of the film's satire, question who the film's intended audience is and deconstruct the implications of the controversial rape scene. It's not all serious though. Expect talk of titties, diva worship of both Gershon and Berkley and a laugh or two about the stage production of Goddess. Questions? Comments? Snark? Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000) feat. Zena Dixon - Horror Queers

Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000) feat. Zena Dixon

Released on 09/16/2020

Grab your fencing gear and get ready to submit your student film for the coveted Hitchcock Award, because we're discussing the 2000 slasher sequel ‘Urban Legends: Final Cut’ with “Real Queen of Horror” (and co-host of the Bloody Disgusting Podcast) Zena Dixon! Join us as we dive into this much-maligned film, which was directed by famous composer John Ottman (who manages to integrate tons of horror movie references into the film). We've got all areas of the spectrum covered, as Joe hates the film, Zena loves it, and Trace falls somewhere in between. Of course, we'll have to cover the bad: Did Ottman take on too much by opting to direct, compose and co-edit the film? Why does this franchise have a knack for bland-o final girls? Why are all the kills so weak? Is Eva Mendes' lesbian character predatory? And does this film feature the most ridiculous motive ever for a slasher movie villain? But hey, it's not all bad. We've got a kidney heist (in a sequence written by the first film's screenwriter Silvio Horta). We've got inspired performances from Jessica Cauffiel (Valentine and Legally Blonde) and a returning Loretta Devine (whose security guard Reese was sadly dumbed down between films). Oh, and another connection to The Lizzie McGuire Movie! Questions? Comments? Snark? The Quiet (2005) feat. Kill By Kill - Horror Queers

The Quiet (2005) feat. Kill By Kill

Released on 09/09/2020

On this week's episode, we're evoking the spirit of American Beauty with lesbian director Jamie Babbit's incest drama/thriller The Quiet. Thankfully we've got Patrick Hamilton and Gena Radcliffe of the Kill by Kill podcast to help us unpack all of the lurid melodrama of this Elisha Cuthbert/Camilla Belle stinker. Where did this snooze worthy film go wrong: the languid pacing? The atrocious dialogue? Aiming for prestige instead of embracing queerness and camp? In between bouts of maniacal laughter about milkshakes, masturbation and Belle's complete lack of screen presence, we never quite reach consensus (Trace *likes* this film...but can't explain why!). All we know for certain is that Connor Kennedy wants to fuck us!
