Micro Queers: Instinct (2018) - Horror Queers

Micro Queers: Instinct (2018)

Released on 08/07/2020

We're trying something new and exciting! This weekly "micro" spin-off of Horror Queers will examine queer horror shorts in an effort to amplify the work of talented filmmakers who may not yet have made a feature film. The sole criteria: the shorts will always be queer or made by queer directors and they will always be freely available for public consumption. To kick things off, we're starting with Brazilian genre director Maria Alice Arida's film Instinct (click to view the short), which chronicles the dangerous attraction between older gallery owner Isabelle and provocative new performance artist Camila. Be sure to watch the 18 minute short before you listen to our discussion! Questions? Comments? Snark? The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) - Horror Queers

The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

Released on 07/21/2021

Prep your cone hair and your swan screams because we're travelling back to the 30s to tackle another James Whale film. This time it's the iconic The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), which features no shortage of queer talent (Whale, Ernest Thesiger, Colin Clive) OR queer readings (the Creature as Other; Dr. Frankenstein and Pretorius as gay dads; Pretorius as corruptor/mentor to the Creature, etc). We discuss the importance of the opening sequence featuring Elsa Lanchester as Mary Shelley, criticize the idiocy of Joseph Breen and the Hays Code, and touch on the film's connection to German Expressionism. Plus: cum wrestling, praise for Una O'Connor's hilarious performance, a discussion of whether Whale intended the film to be read as queer, and speculation about why The Bride has become a horror icon (it's the lewk, henny!) Raw (2016) feat. Dede Crimmins

Released on 07/07/2021

Pull that gravy-soaked cafeteria meat patty out of your pocket and get ready for a cannibalistic coming-of-age tale because we're doing a deep dive into Julia Ducournau's debut film Raw! Joining us for the discussion is film critic Dede Crimmins (just in time for her birthday today!). Tag along as we endure what looks like one of the most intense and horrific hazing rituals ever put on film before lamenting the film's unfortunate vomit bag festival buzz that no doubt set up unrealistic expectations for viewers. We'll then pick apart the many, many metaphors contained within the film. We'll also share a plethora of anecdotes, including but not limited to: bedbug experiences, public urination, hair-chewing, mirror-fucking, bikini waxes and Ducournau's secret trick to directing a dance scene Plus, are the parents in the film the worst film parents ever? Is 7-Eleven pizza secretly amazing? And does Trace hate women? Tune in and find out! References: >> Hagen, Kate: 31 Days of Feminist Horror Films: RAW Questions? Comments? Snark?
