Chucky S01E01: 'Death By Misadventure'
We're temporarily setting aside our exploration of queer horror shorts so that we can do weekly coverage of Don Mancini's new series, Chucky (2021).
In our spoiler-filled discussion of the first episode, we discuss the focus on pre-teen characters, the use of the F-slur, homages to classic horror and why we're totally fine with the show not being "realistic."

Halloween (2018) feat. Richard Newby
Pull your phone out of that pudding because we're heading to Haddonfield to revisit David Gordon Green's 2018 sequel to Halloween titled...Halloween! Tapping in for the discussion is Richard Newby, the author of the horror short story collection We Make Monsters Here!
Join us as we take a deep dive into this legacy sequel that wants to remind us of every previous sequel in the franchise despite also wanting us to forget about them. We'll discuss the film's portrayal of trauma and how it compares to the portrayal in Halloween: H20. Oh, and how about the 30 minutes of deleted scenes (not all of which are on the Blu)?
Plus, Joe's magical talents, Creighton Duke, British Ellie Kemper, baby-killing, Bánh Mi, "Gotcha!" and.....is that the same wig from 1981's Halloween II just spray-painted gray? Oh, and we need to talk about Cameron...

Joy Ride (2001)
We're cruising into October with our trusty CB radio in hand for a rewatch of John Dahl's Joy Ride (2001). The film features a pretty iconic scene of stars Paul Walker and Steve Zahn walking naked into a diner, but that’s not the only queer aspect of this highway horror film.
Using Eric Langberg’s Gayly Dreadful piece, we consider how the film is in conversation with the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard and how that opens up readings of hate crimes, gay panic and repressed sexuality in the film’s villain Rusty Nail (Ted Levine).
Plus: Trace’s hatred of pranks, fears of doxxing, the film's MANY endings, misusing Leelee Sobieski, and coming to grips with the fact that Fuller is actually an asshole.

Dracula's Daughter (1936)
Check your zoos for elephants that are seeing pink men because we're discussing the 1936 film (and direct sequel to 1931's Dracula) Dracula's Daughter! And boy do we have some things to say about the hetero nonsense in this movie.
First, we'll spill the tea on the film's dramatic road to production, complete with cameos from super-producer David O. Selznick, queer director James Whale and everyone's favorite Production Code Administration head: Joseph Breen!
Then we'll dive into all things queer in this underseen classic, including a third act whose sole purpose is to make the straights happy. But hey, it's not like director Lambert Hillyer didn't fit as much queerness in the film as possible (it's not even subtext, y'all).
Plus: an X-rated bow tie metaphor, personal space, Hedda Hopper(?!) and more analysis from everyone's favorite queer horror theorist: Harry M. Benshoff!

Mulholland Drive (2001)
In advance of its 20th anniversary, we're dipping into the beautiful, surreal world of David Lynch's Mulholland Drive (2001).
In keeping with the film, the episode adopts a non-linear format as we track the Betty/Rita storyline, then double back to discuss Adam, before finally digging into the extra footage Lynch shot when the project switched from TV pilot to film.Â
Expect plenty of discussion about how great both female leads are, which Hollywood director Adam reminds Trace of, Joe’s ongoing obsession with Showgirls, and talk of how goddamn gorgeous this film is.
Plus: Speculation on a shared cinematic universe with Southland Tales and Alias S3, Trace's dislike of Noir, and the hilarious reason why Monty Montgomery’s line delivery as the Cowboy is so unnerving.Â
