Ep 143

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991) feat. Mark O. Estes

Episode | 115 min | Sep 15, 2021

Just in time for its 30th anniversary, we're dipping back into the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise with a look at Rachel Talalay's 1991 entry, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare.

Joining us to discuss his childhood favorite (and gateway into horror) is Mark O. Estes, writer and host of the Midnight Social Distortion podcast.

This film is...a lot, particularly how it balances laughs (Looney Tunes!), scares and camp. Is it paying homage to the franchise or simply doing a poor imitation of previous films?

Plus: discussion of "Final" entries in franchises, comparisons to Hellraiser: Bloodline, tangents on Paranormal Activity and Friday the 13th, films that that made us feel magical as kids, the subversion of John Doe's death and the film's treatment of sexual assault. Like we said: it's A LOT!

Ep 100

Cruising (1980) feat. Andrew Scahill

Episode | 115 min | Nov 18, 2020

Hold onto your hips and lips because for our 100th episode, we're going Cruising! Along for the *ahem* ride, is film professor Andrew Scahill, who guides us through an academic deep dive of the 1980 William Friedkin film, which has been one of our most requested titles since we started Horror Queers!

There's LOTS to talk about: the heavily protested production, the depiction of the gay community, the critique of the police, and the frank depiction of sex and community. Throw in the film's historical legacy and its reappraisal through a contemporary lens and there's plenty to sink our teeth into.

Plus: Pacino's look of gay panic, The Velvet Rage, and a Rebecca/Cruising porn parody! Don't blame us - you made us do this!

Ep 99

The Ruins (2008) feat. Dax Ebaben

Episode | 112 min | Nov 11, 2020

Can four Americans on vacation in Mexico just disappear? We're here to find out as we discuss previous guest Carter Smith's 2008 pandemic creature feature The Ruins! Joining us is Bloody Disgusting's own Dax Ebaben!

Join us as we discuss the Stephen King-approved source material (aka one of the scariest novels of the 21st century) and how it translates to the screen in the Ben Stiller(!)-produced film that most critics compared unfavorably to Little Shop of Horrors (those critics are dumb).

Plus, sad handjobs, impromptu amputations, questionable German accents (sorry, Joe Anderson) and all the praise for Laura Ramsey's tragic performance.

Ep 98

Copycat (1995) feat. K Lynch

Episode | 102 min | Nov 4, 2020

Here's our Salem Horror Fest episode on Jon Amiel's vastly underrated (and under-seen) 1995 film Copycat! Joining us for the discussion is the director of the festival themselves: K Lynch!

Join us as we wax poetic over the incredible performances of Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter and the implied lesbianism between their characters, raise our eyebrows at Harry Connick Jr's "squirrel covers"-obsessed serial killer, and debate whether or not killing off the only explicitly gay character is homophobic.

Plus, we'll lament the fact that Copycat was released in the shadow of Se7en, which came out just a month prior. But never fear! We'll sing the film's praises and point out all the things it gets right, and why it should be remembered as a classic '90s thriller.
