The Forsaken (2001) feat. Paul Etheredge - Horror Queers

The Forsaken (2001) feat. Paul Etheredge

Released on 04/28/2021

Protect your wallets from suspicious drifters because we're ending April with a boring, unsexy vampire road trip movie: J.S. Cardone'sThe Forsaken! Joining us for this torturous venture is Hellbent director Paul Etheredge! Join us as we try to determine whether the film is unintentionally homoerotic or just plain bro-y. We'll delve into Simon Rex's '90s porn career, discuss some of our own porn preferences and discuss the heavy vampirism-as-AIDS metaphor the film incorporates. A discussion of The Forsaken can't be had without discussing kinda-sorta lead actress Izabella Miko and how the film mishandles her character. She's nude in her introductory scene, has maybe five lines of dialogue and isn't given a name until the end credits. Yay, feminism! Plus, title card titties, Johnathon Schaech giving a performance, new (terrible) vampire lore, waitresses who are really concerned about the coffee bill and just how many times can these characters run out of gas? Spoiler alert: a lot. Questions? Comments? Snark? Silent Hill (2006) feat. Pod Mortem - Horror Queers

Silent Hill (2006) feat. Pod Mortem

Released on 04/21/2021

This week on the pod, keep an ear out for the air siren because we're headed to Silent Hill (2006) for its 15th anniversary. Along for the ride are Renee, Travis and John Paul of Pod Mortem, who provide both game expertise and disdain for the presence of Sean Bean's Chris (we love the actor, but why is he here?!) Up for discussion: how director Christophe Gans scored the gig, how writer Roger Avary paid homage to AND overcomplicated the game's plot and grievances about the 2+ hour runtime. Plus: compliments for the production design and monster choreography, issues with the depiction of sexual assault (CW) and questions about founding a child sacrificing cult in a small town. Scream 4 (10th Anniversary Bonus)

Released on 04/15/2021

Don't get excited! This isn't a full episode on Wes Craven's Scream 4 (2011). It's simply an acknowledgement that the film, which is very important to us, is celebrating its tenth anniversary. And so, in advance of our full length episode next January, here's a taste of why we love Scream 4. Questions? Comments? Snark? The Silence of the Lambs (1991) feat. Reyna Cervantes - Horror Queers

The Silence of the Lambs (1991) feat. Reyna Cervantes

Released on 04/14/2021

The lambs have stopped screaming so we're going all-in on Jonathan Demme's critically-acclaimed and Oscar-winning film The Silence of the Lambs. Joining us is Reyna Cervantes, the co-host of the Horror In Session podcast! In what is an admittedly unorthodox episode for us, we eschew a traditional plot summary in favor of a more analytical episode, looking back at the film's development while tackling the transphobic elements of Buffalo Bill and the impact it has had on the trans community in the 30 years since the film's release. Plus, feminist horror, intent vs. impact, and what would a 4th season of Hannibal look like with Clarice Starling? Reference: 30 years in, The Silence Of The Lambs’ Jame Gumb still deserves better, Harmony Colangelo for The A.V. Club Questions? Comments? Snark? The Innocents (1961) - Horror Queers

The Innocents (1961)

Released on 04/07/2021

This week on the pod, we're headed back to Bly Manor with Jack Clayton's 1961 classic, The Innocents (see also: last year's Patreon episode on The Haunting of Bly Manor). This classic Gothic Horror film is reminiscent of Diabolique, Rebecca and The Haunting and has a strong queer connection thanks to screenwriter Truman Capote, whom we discuss at length, including Trace’s hatred of Holly Golightly. Plus: an influential 15th century picture book, Cinemascope challenges, the genesis of Austin Powers, and evil children. But the real question is whether Miss Giddens is going mad...or are there actually ghosts? Reading: Treddy, Dennis. Bride of Chucky (1998) feat. Kelly Gredner - Horror Queers

Bride of Chucky (1998) feat. Kelly Gredner

Released on 03/31/2021

Load up your Hot Topic gift bag, prep your Swedish meatballs and blast some "Living Dead Girl" because we're finally covering Ronny Yu's franchise revival Bride of Chucky! Joining us for the discussion is Kelly Gredner, 1/2 of the Spinsters of Horror! Join us as we all go gaga for Tiffany's trailer (seriously, we want to live in it), praise Jennifer Tilly's perfect performance (and her spectacular outfits) and debate the pronunciation of the French word for "orgasm." Kelly connects the film to her teenage Goth years, Joe discusses his personal connection with the film's queer character David (thanks, Don Mancini!) and Trace has an orgasmic reaction to that waterbed set piece. Plus, a Heart of Damballa-shaped franchise plot hole, Windows 98 nostalgia, Kathy Najimy, and.....a Never Been Kissed reference? Barbie, eat your heart out. Questions? Comments? Snark?
