Celebrating the month of September being back to school month for many, Karen has the selected the 1960 film “Village of The Dammed” for our viewing pleasure. Join Greg and Karen as they discuss the film while enjoying a “Back to School-tini”. Karen found the recipe below on olivejude.com.

Back to School-tini

• 2 oz vodka
• 1/2 oz coconut rum
• 1/2 oz apple juice
• splash of grenadine
• apple slice for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice.
  2. Pour in the vodka, coconut rum, and apple juice. Add a splash of grenadine.
  3. Shake well and strain into a martini glass.
  4. Garnish with an apple slice.

A Brief Synopsis: One day the peaceful village of Midwich is cast into a mysterious sleep for several hours, but with no obvious consequences, until soon all the women of child-bearing age turn out to be pregnant. Their children are all born at the same time, and grow quickly into very spooky young people, with strange white-blonde hair and eerie eyes.

Celebrating its release 62 years ago on September 5, 1960, Greg has chosen the Hammer film “The Brides of Dracula” for our viewing pleasure this week. Join Greg and Karen as they discuss the film while they enjoy a Transylvania Iced Tea. The recipe that Greg found on drinknation.com is below.

Transylvania Iced Tea Recipe

• 1/2 oz gin
• 1/2 oz raspberry liqueur
• 1/2 oz light rum
• 1/2 oz white tequila
• 1/2 oz vodka
• Fill with 1/2 cranberry juice
• Fill with 1/2 sour mix

Instructions:

  1. Add ice to a mason jar.
  2. Add ingredients and stir well.

A Brief Synopsis: A young baron who has inherited the Dracula curse is kept locked away by his mother to hide the family secret – although she does procure for him an occasional victim. However, when he breaks out of his castle prison, she becomes a victim herself, and the undead lad takes flight to terrorize the local village and rampage through a girls’ school before a specialist is called in.

C.H.U.D. – SSP071

Wanting to refresh her memory, Karen has chosen the 1984 film “C.H.U.D.” for our viewing pleasure this week. She saw this film way back in 1984, but she really didn’t remember it. Hmmm. Join Greg and Karen as they discuss the film while they enjoy a “New York Sour” cocktail. The recipe that Karen found on foodandwine.com is below.

New York Sour Cocktail Recipe

• 2 oz bourbon
• 1 oz fresh lemon juice
• 1/2 oz simple syrup
• 1 oz fruity red wine, such as Zinfandel or Gamay
• 1 strip lemon zest

Instructions:

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add bourbon, lemon juice, and simple syrup; seal lid on shaker, and shake until chilled and frost forms on shaker, about 15 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass filled with large ice cubes.
  2. Gently and slowly, pour wine over the back of a spoon held just above the cocktail’s surface, letting the wine float at top of glass. Pinch lemon peel over the cocktail, and run around the rim of the glass; add peel to glass as a garnish. Serve immediately.

A Brief Synopsis: Photographer George Cooper is documenting the lives of subterranean homeless people, a population that has mysteriously dwindled. After receiving information from a reporter, George becomes aware of a conspiracy theory about cannibalistic monsters lurking in the sewers. He teams up with the reporter, a policeman and a priest to fight two battles: one against the cannibals and the other against a corrupt government official.

Gladiator Blood & Sand Cocktail Recipe

• 1 oz amaretto liqueur
• 1 oz peach-flavored bourbon liqueur
• 1 oz orange juice
• 1 oz lemon-lime soda, such a Sprite

Instructions:

  1. Stir amaretto liqueur, bourbon liqueur, orange juice, and lemon-lime soda together in a glass.
  2. Enjoy.

A Brief Synopsis: A man with brutal and macabre origins, Leon Corledo was raised in the home of Don Alfredo Corledo, his kind and loving adopted father. When he leaves Don Alfredo to find work, Leon discovers that he has increasingly violent urges. Although these tendencies are calmed by Leon’s love for the beautiful Christina, he ultimately cannot contain his curse and transforms into a werewolf, terrorizing the Spanish countryside.

Karen found “Carnival of Souls” from 1962 while surfing the Internet and discovered that this film influenced a lot of talented directors. For that reason she though we should have it in our library of watched films. Join Greg and Karen as they discuss the film while they enjoy a Car Crash Cocktail. Car Crash Cocktail Recipe

• 1 oz of amaretto almond liqueur
• 7 oz of sweet and sour mix
• 7 oz of orange juice
• 1 dash of grenadine syrup
• 1 oz of southern comfort peach liqueur

Instructions:

  1. Pour the Southern Comfort and amaretto almond liqueur into a collins glass over 1 or2 ice cubes.
  2. Fill the glass with 1/2 sweet and sour mix and 1/2 orange juice.
  3. Top with grenadine, and serve.

A Brief Synopsis: Mary Henry ends up the sole survivor of a fatal car accident through mysterious circumstances. Trying to put the incident behind her, she moves to Utah and takes a job as a church organist. But her fresh start is interrupted by visions of a fiendish man. As the visions begin to occur more frequently, Mary finds herself drawn to the deserted carnival on the outskirts of town. The strangely alluring carnival may hold the secret to her tragic past.

Blind Bat Cocktail Recipe

• 4 oz of vodka
• 4 oz of Coca-Cola
• 1 splash of white rum

Instructions:

  1. Pour the Coca-cola into a tall glass, followed by the vodka.
  2. Add just a splash of Bacardi rum just for taste.
  3. Sit back and enjoy.

A Brief Synopsis: A killer called “the Bat” has claimed many lives in the small town inhabited by novelist Cornelia van Gorder and her maid, Lizzie. As Cornelia implores Dr. Malcolm Wells to help her ailing maid, $1 million in the town’s bank goes missing. With greed and fear reaching new heights, police Lt. Andy Anderson goes to Cornelia’s house to investigate additional murders committed by the Bat.

The Omen Cocktail Recipe

• 1 part Rose’s Lime Juice
• 1 part sweet & sour mix
• 2 parts vodka
• 1 dash cranberry juice

Instructions:

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a shaker with ice.
  2. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  3. Enjoy.

A Brief Synopsis: American diplomat Robert adopts Damien when his wife, Katherine, delivers a stillborn child. After Damien’s first nanny hangs herself, Father Brennan warns Robert that Damien will kill Katherine’s unborn child. Shortly thereafter, Brennan dies and Katherine miscarries when Damien pushes her off a balcony. As more people around Damien die, Robert investigates Damien’s background and realizes his adopted son may be the Antichrist.

• 2 oz Jamaican rum
• 1 oz orange brandy
• 2 oz pineapple juice
• club soda to top

Instructions:

  1. Combine all of your ingredients in a rocks glass filled with ice.
  2. Stir and then serve. Preferably not with an actually Monkey Paw attached.

A Brief Synopsis: A curio dealer sells a monkey’s paw that can grant the possessor three wishes but warns that disaster will follow.
