We're dropping a mini-review of Carter Smith's new queer horror film Swallowed, which just had its world-premiere at the Overlook Film Festival! Since the film is still seeking distribution and thus can't be seen by most audiences, this a completely spoiler-free review. We will release a longer (spoiler-filled) episode on the film when it gets released. Starring Jena Malone (The Ruins, The Neon Demon) and Mark Patton (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge), Swallowed is a pulse-pounding tale of two best friends on what might be their final night together. Make sure those human fetuses are refrigerated properly because we're hitting the road with Rosie (fucking) Perez and Javier Bardem in Álex de la Iglesia's controversial film Perdita Durango (1997), which only just saw the release of its uncut version last year! Joining us for the trip is Salem Horror Fest's Festival Director Kay Lynch! Join us as we look at the film's origins as a sequel to Wild at Heart (yes, really) before discussing the films taboo and challenging subject matter. Rosie Perez's career-best performance forces us to rationalize loving a character who commits so many heinous acts. Oh, and content warnings aplenty for this one because we've got filicide, f-slurs, voodoo rituals, copious amounts of cocaine, blood sacrifices, corpse mutilations, grave desecrations and, in the words of the director himself, consensual rape??? This week we're covering our second Pascal Laugier film, 2018's Incident in a Ghostland. C/W: misogyny, transphobia. Along for the ride is Blerdy Massacre co-host Xero Gravity, who joins us in getting increasingly aggravated with the Martyrs director the more we learn what he thinks he's doing with this film, which includes a lot of teen female abuse, a caricature trans woman villain and unabashed love for HP Lovecraft?! Brush up on your two-up and watch out for them kangaroos (oh, God, the kangaroos!) because we're heading Down Under to discuss Ted Kotcheff's famed "lost film" Wake in Fright (1971)! Joining us are A Nightmare on Fierce Street co-hosts Sharai Bohannon and Trent Reese! First thing's first: this film has a 10-minute-long sequence featuring Cannibal Holocaust levels of real-life animal violence (it's the kangaroos), so major content warning for that. Consider yourself warned. Anyway, after a brief musical theatre tangent, we discuss the film's journey from novel to film to lost film to restored masterpiece before going all-in on its portrayal of masculinity. It all leads up to a discussion of a gay sex scene that, quite frankly, we were shocked to see! Plus, shirtless Donald Pleasence (nips o' plenty), one spicy hotel receptionist, a very serious conversation about Bloody Marys and (the ultimate question) is Janette a slut? It's another Friday the 13th, so we're back on the Jason Voorhees beat with Jason Lives (1986), the sixth entry in the franchise and also its smartest? That's the argument Trace makes, though Joe is less certain about its humor. What we both agree on is that the Tom McLoughlin film has a (mostly) great final girl in Megan, a hot Tommy Jarvis, and Jason's got a tight heinie. Plus: the Camp Blood card game (here are the rules), the film's best death and scariest sequences, and justice for Sissy and Paula, who deserved more screen time than those corporate paint ballers!
