Celebrating the 63rd anniversary of its release on May 3rd, Greg has chosen the 1960 Hammer film “The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll” for our enjoyment this week. Join Greg and Karen as they discuss the film while they enjoy a “Sweet Poison Cocktail“. The recipe that Greg found on delish.com is below.

Sweet Poison Cocktail Recipe

• 1 oz light rum
• 2 oz coconut rum
• 1 oz Blue Curacao
• 1 handful ice
• pineapple juice
• pineapple wedge (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Combine both rums and Blue Curacao in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake, then pour into a cocktail glass.
  2. Fill the rest of the glass with chilled pineapple juice. Garnish with a pineapple wedge.

A Brief Synopsis: In London in 1874, Dr. Henry Jekyll’s wife, Kitty, is secretly involved with his friend Paul Allen (who hounds money from Jekyll). Ignoring the warnings of his colleague and friend Dr. Ernst Littauer, the middle-aged, mild-mannered Jekyll concocts a chemical potion which he hopes will help him learn the depths of the human mind.

Piggybacking off of her last film choice, the 1922 silent film “Nosferatu”, Karen has chosen the 2000 film “Shadow of the Vampire”, which is a fictionalized account of the making of “Nosferatu”. Join Greg and Karen as they discuss the film while enjoying a “Hpnotiq Margarita“. Karen found the recipe below at thespuceeats.com.

Hpnotiq Margarita
• 1 1/2 oz tequila
• 1 1/2 oz Hpnotiq liqueur
• 3/4 oz triple sec
• 1/2 oz sour mix
• 1/2 oz pineapple juice
• lime wheel for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Gather the ingredients.
  2. In a cocktail shaker, pour tequila, Hpnotiq, triple sec, sour mix, and pineapple juice. Fill with ice.
  3. Shake well.
  4. Strain into a chilled margarita or large rocks glass filled with ice.
  5. Garnish with a lime wheel.

A Brief Synopsis: F. W. Murnau is struggling to create his silent classic “Nosferatu” on location in Eastern Europe. The director is obsessed with making this the most authentic vampire movie ever. To that end, Murnau has employed a real vampire, Max Schreck, explaining to the crew that he is the ultimate of that new breed, the “method actor” — trained by Stanislavsky himself. Schreck will appear only in character and only at night.

Hocus Pocus Salem Cocktail Recipe

• 1 1/2 oz vodka
• 1/2 oz Midori melon liqueur
• 1/2 oz Blue Curacao
• 3 oz freshly squeezed orange juice
• 3 oz lemon lime soda
• 1 tsp silver cake shimmer dust

Instructions:

  1. Add ALL ingredients into a cocktail shaker and shake until well mixed.
  2. Pour over ice, garnish with cherries and serve.

A Brief Synopsis: A radio DJ in Salem, Mass., is plagued by nightmarish visions of vengeful witches after she plays a record by a mysterious group known only as “The Lords.”

Tito’s Terrortini Cocktail
• 1 1/2 oz Tito’s Handmade Vodka
• 1 oz lemon juice
• 3/4 oz simple syrup
• 1/2 oz pomegranate juice
• 1 maraschino cherry

Instructions:

  1. Add Tito’s Handmade Vodka, lemon juice, and simple syrup to a shaker with ice.
  2. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass.
  3. Sink pomegranate juice by pouring slowly over the back of a spoon into cocktail.
  4. Drop in one maraschino cherry.

A Brief Synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok summons Thomas Hutter to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen. After Orlok reveals his vampire nature, Hutter struggles to escape the castle, knowing that Ellen is in grave danger. Meanwhile Orlok’s servant, Knock, prepares for his master to arrive at his new home.

• 1 oz Midori
• 1 oz amaretto
• 1 oz sour mix
• orange juice

Instructions:

  1. Pour over ice in a large glass and stir.
  2. Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry.

A Brief Synopsis: Debonair supernatural expert Captain Kronos and his hunchbacked assistant, Grost, meet their match when they encounter a village where vampires have been stealing the vitality of young women, leaving them elderly and decrepit. Armed with his sword and formidable deductive reasoning, Kronos begins to solve the macabre mystery, with evidence pointing to the aristocratic Lady Durward and her family as prime suspects.

Birthday Cake Martini Recipe

• 2 oz whipped vodka
• 1 1/2 oz amaretto
• 1 oz white chocolate liqueur
• 2 oz half and half
• honey and sprinkles for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Begin with two shallow dishes or plates. To one, add a teaspoon of honey. To the other, add the sprinkles.
  2. First, rim the edge of the martini glass in the honey, and then dip it in the sprinkles. Set aside.
  3. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the vodka, amaretto, white chocolate liqueur, and half and half. Shake vigorously.
  4. Strain into your prepared martini glass.

Spider Venom Cocktail Recipe

• 1 1/2 oz spiced rum
• 1/2 oz tequila
• 1/2 oz Fireball
• 3 oz cherry apple juice

Instructions:

  1. Fill a glass with ice ¾ of the way full.
  2. In a bar shaker add 3-4 pieces of ice, rum, tequila, fireball and shake well to combine.
  3. Strain into an ice filled glass.
  4. Top off with Cherry Apple Juice.
  5. Enjoy!

A Brief Synopsis: Arizona farmer Walter Colby and his wife, Birch, have a problem on their hands: One of their cows was just killed by a creature, but they have no idea what the beast could have been. So they consult local vet Dr. Robert Hansen, who becomes puzzled and calls in scientist Diane Ashley. Eventually, the duo discovers that oversize spiders are invading the small town, putting the entire population in danger as a county fair begins.

A Brief Synopsis: A leprechaun surfaces in Los Angeles to claim a bride, as his previous object of affection was denied to him a thousand years before in Ireland. He kidnaps teenager Bridget, grotesquely murdering anyone who gets in his way. It falls to Bridget’s boyfriend, Cody, to rescue her. Cody enlists the aid of his perpetually tipsy uncle, Morty, who decides to go after the homicidal leprechaun’s pot of gold.
