Wheeler takes to the road when he realizes the true cost of his Navy career. He was using his not inconsequential skills in the service of a war that he could no longer support and he can no longer be a participant. He has to leave but has no destination other than far away from the killing, as he sets out in his aging VW bus to find himself and discover how the world really works. His desire is simply to contribute to the greater good and discover where he belongs when he is no longer controlled by a schedule not of his own making. He does find his place and begins to find his role, even when the forces are larger that he could have imagined.
