Sam watched helplessly as one of the creatures took out a strange metal instrument that looked like some sort of large camera. The creature moved it back and forth across Sam's body. He felt nothing as the instrument passed over him. Then the creatures turned him on his side and did the same thing. It was as if the instrument was examining every inch of his skin, every part of his body. The creatures themselves moved slowly but efficiently. Their movements seemed automatic somehow, as if they were robots with a task to do. They didn't try to communicate in any way with Sam. Instead, they seemed unconcerned that he was human, that he had feelings, or that he could communicate. He was treated like a laboratory animal, a specimen to by analyzed. After what seemed to be hours, the strange examination came to an end. One of the creatures tugged at Sam with its scissor-like hands. Sam began to float in midair again, back down toward the pier. Ahead of him, he saw his friend Ted slumped as if he was sleeping at the edge of the dock. When he reached the pier, Sam discovered he was able to move on his own again. He tried to stand up as the creatures floated away in the distance, but he couldn't. His knees were weak and his arms were trembling. He fell to his knees on the pier's rough wooden slats. Ted lay on the dock beside him, his face white and pasty, his eyes closed. With shaky hands, Sam reached over and touched his friend. Ted's eyes slowly opened. "I-I must have fallen asleep," Ted responded, smiling and unaware that anything strange had happened.

About the Author

There is nothing Tracey Dils likes better than a good ghost story. When she was growing up, she loved to scare her friends and family with terrifying tales of haunted places. In fact, she scared her little sister so badly that to this day she still sleeps with the lights on! Tracey has never actually seen a ghost, but she has seen evidence of one. She was having lunch at an old inn in her hometown. The inn was said to be haunted. While she was eating, a tray of salt and pepper shakers rose off a counter, hung in midair for a few seconds, and then fell to the floor in one big crash. Tracey thinks that a ghost was trying to get her attention so that she'd write a story about it. When she's not writing or spending time with her husband, Richard, and her two children, Emily and Phillip, Tracey loves to talk to young people about writing. She has held ghost-story writing workshops in schools, libraries, and writing centers throughout her home state. Tracey is also the author of Real-Life Scary Places, Real-Life Strange Encounters, and The Scariest Stories You've Ever Heard, Part III. She has also written several picture books, including Annabelle's Awful Waffle, A Look Around Coral Reefs, Big Bad Bugs, and Leapin' Lizards.
