Before she fell into a deep and healing sleep, the woman croaked to the doctor, "How did you know to come to me?" "It was your daughter," the doctor answered. "She led me to you," he said pointing to where he had last seen the little girl in the light blue dress. Only the girl wasn't there. "But my daughter," the women's voice was choked again, this time by a sob. "She had the same disease and she-well, she didn't make it. She died two weeks ago today-at the very stroke of midnight." Dr. Murphy was sure the woman was still delirious from the fever. There had been a little girl, and she was very much alive. He had just seen her a minute ago. And she had been dressed in a blue shift and worn, torn, holey shoes. The woman must be hallucinating. "Ah, my dear lady, you rest now. You are surely mistaken." "No," the woman insisted, the tears now streaming down her face. "She's with the angels now. She was so sick. I went to find a doctor, but no one would come here. By the time I got home, she was gone." The doctor sighed, and stroked the woman's hand sympathetically. "It couldn't be so. I just saw her . . ." "All I have left of her," the woman continued, "is her dress, the one she was wearing when she died. And her shoes, not much good to anyone they were so worn. I sold her body to a medical school for research. I couldn't afford a funeral, and I needed the money. But the dress and the shoes-I still have them. They're in the closet, there . . ." Dr. Murphy walked to the wardrobe that she pointed to, more to satisfy her than anything. But when he opened the door to the closet, he felt his heart choke with terror. There, in the closet, hung the same light blue dress the little girl had been wearing. And, on the floor underneath, were the worn and holey shoes.
