Exit 8: You'll Hate this Film if you Like Traditional Horror
Released on 05/27/2026
Chris from After the Scream reviews Exit 8, the new psychological horror film based on the viral Japanese indie horror game. This isn’t your traditional horror movie filled with jump scares and nonstop gore.
Exit 8 is a slow, tense, atmospheric horror that forces you to pay attention to every detail.
In this review, Chris breaks down why Exit 8 feels almost interactive, how the repetitive liminal hallway creates claustrophobic anxiety, and why the film’s anomaly-based horror works so well. From the disturbing sound design to the Groundhog Day-style repetition, Exit 8 turns ordinary spaces into something deeply unsettling.
Chris also dives into the deeper themes of the film, including fear of fatherhood, anxiety, isolation, repetition, and modern elevated horror storytelling. While many horror fans may hate the film’s minimalist approach, others may find it one of the most unique psychological horror experiences in recent years.
If you enjoy slow burn horror, liminal space horror, psychological thrillers, analog horror vibes, indie horror films, or movies that make you think instead of relying on cheap jump scares, Exit 8 may be worth checking out.

Obsession Review: Curry Barker Just Changed Horror
Released on 05/19/2026
Curry Barker’s Obsession completely caught us off guard. This is easily one of our favorite horror films of the year and one of the most intense indie horror experiences we’ve had in a long time.
From the unpredictable jump scares, disturbing atmosphere, incredible sound design, and raw emotional tension, this movie kept us uncomfortable from beginning to end. Curry Barker delivers insanely confident filmmaking for a first feature, blending modern loneliness and toxic relationships with old-school horror filmmaking.
Inde Navarrette gives an unforgettable performance as Nikki — shifting from vulnerable and sweet to terrifying and deeply unsettling in seconds. Her performance genuinely got under our skin.
In this review, we break down:
• The disturbing relationship dynamics
• Why the jump scares work so well
• The incredible sound design
• Nikki’s terrifying performance
• Curry Barker’s direction and future in horror
• Why this film feels fresh compared to modern horror
If you love psychological horror, relationship horror, uncomfortable tension, and unpredictable indie films, this is one you need to see.

Hokum Review: Adam Scott Can't Even Save This!
Released on 05/06/2026
Is Hokum actually one of the best horror movies of the year… or just all atmosphere and no story?
Chris and Jess break down the latest horror release starring Adam Scott, diving into the film’s creepy atmosphere, slow-burn tension, confusing narrative, and why the character work left us completely disconnected. While the movie looks great and builds some solid unease, we couldn’t shake the feeling that it never fully comes together.
Was Hokum genuinely unsettling… or just frustrating?
Let us know what you thought of the film in the comments.

Why Lee Cronin's Mummy Movie Feels So Off!
Released on 04/19/2026
In this episode, we break down Lee Cronin's The Mummy and why it feels so off from what you’d expect. Instead of a traditional mummy movie built around mythology and curses, this leans heavily into possession horror, feeling closer to films like Evil Dead Rise and The Exorcist.
We talk about how the movie focuses more on being gross and uncomfortable than on actually being scary, and how that shift changes the entire experience. From the tone to the rules it’s playing by, we break down why it feels like a completely different movie than what the title promises—and whether that disconnect is the real reason it doesn’t land.

Faces of Death 2026 Shocked Me... But Not How You Think!
Released on 04/15/2026
In this episode of After the Scream, I review Faces of Death (2026)—a film I didn’t expect to like, but ended up finding surprisingly effective.
Directed by Daniel Goldhaber and co-written with Isa Mazzei, the film stars Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, and Charli XCX, and follows a content moderator who begins uncovering disturbing videos tied to the infamous 1978 original.
This isn’t just a straight remake—it reimagines the concept in a modern world driven by constant content and online consumption. I break down what works, from the performances and tone to how the film successfully blends old-school horror with modern technology in a way that actually feels real.
But more importantly, we get into the bigger idea behind it: have we become so desensitized to what we watch that nothing really shocks us anymore? And if that’s true… why did this one still hit?

Ready Or Not 2: Actually GOOD?! (Shocking Truth)
Released on 03/24/2026
Chris and Jess review Ready or Not 2—the sequel nobody asked for… but one we actually had a blast with.
With Samara Weaving back and absolutely killing it again, plus the original directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett returning alongside writers Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy, this sequel keeps the same chaotic energy—even if the story didn’t really need to continue.
We break down what works, what falls short of the original, and why it still ends up being a fun, over-the-top ride.

Dolly Review: Have We Finally Found the Next Horror Icon?
Released on 03/17/2026
In this review of Dolly, I break down why this gritty, grindhouse slasher worked so well for me. With strong Texas Chain Saw Massacre vibes, a disturbing new killer, and a raw 1970s-style aesthetic, this film feels like a throwback to when horror was simple, brutal, and effective.
I talk about what makes Dolly stand out—from its uncomfortable atmosphere and practical gore to its potential new horror icon—while also touching on some of the flaws critics are pointing out.
If you're a fan of old-school slashers and dirty, backwoods horror, this might be one for you… but it’s definitely not for everyone.

The Bride Movie Review: I Nearly Walked Out!
Released on 03/11/2026
In this episode of After the Scream, we break down Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! — and let’s just say… we did not walk out feeling the same way.
Set in a stylized, gothic 1930s Chicago, the film follows Frankenstein’s Monster (Christian Bale) as he convinces a scientist to resurrect a murdered woman (Jessie Buckley) as his companion. But when the Bride awakens with her own will — and rage — the two outsiders plunge into the city’s criminal underworld while trying to figure out what it means to truly be alive.
The film mixes Frankenstein horror, gangster noir, feminist revenge story, musical numbers, and art-house satire— and that’s exactly where things get complicated.
One of us walked out mad, the other walked out confused.
We talk about:
- Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ambitious but chaotic direction
- Jessie Buckley’s incredible performance as the Bride
- Christian Bale’s underused Monster
- The film’s heavy feminist themes and “female rage” angle
- The strange meta-narrative involving Mary Shelley
- And why the movie might collapse under the weight of its own ideas
Is The Bride! a bold reinvention of Frankenstein mythology… or a self-indulgent mess?
Let’s talk about it.

Nostalgia Bait? Scream 7 Review!
Released on 03/03/2026
SCREAM 7 REVIEW | Nostalgia vs Substance? Is the Satire Still There?
Chris and Jess are divided.
In this episode of After the Scream, we break down Scream 7 and the big question surrounding the franchise right now — is it still sharp satire, or has it become the very thing it used to mock?
Jess felt the nostalgia worked. The callbacks, the legacy energy, and the return to familiar territory felt earned and emotional. Chris? Not so much. For him, Scream 7 leaned too heavily on nostalgia and comfort instead of pushing the franchise forward.
We also talk about:
- Is the satire still effective in a seventh installment?
- Does self-awareness still feel clever — or predictable?
- Can a franchise critique repetition while repeating itself?
- Was the nostalgia meaningful… or overused?
We were both excited to see Neve Campbell return and to have Kevin Williamson back in the creative mix — but does that alone make the film work?
Is Scream 7 running on nostalgia… or evolving the meta commentary that made the original Scream iconic?
