Drunk in a Graveyard

This week, we're talking about Shudder's newest horror anthology (that received a special pre-streaming release this past weekend on The Last Drive In with Joe Bob Briggs) Scare Package which takes all the tropes we know and love/loath and puts them in horror short form. Some are good, some are great - you know the drill. After that we're talking about a classic horror hostesses' film debut - Elvira: Mistress of the Dark - which Arrow has just released in blu-ray format. Mistress of the Dark is the closest the spooky goth set gets to a dumb '80s teen comedy and we love it beehive hair and all.

The first one finds us lost in a 1930s jazz club with Robert Altman's depression-era noire "Kansas City". There's mob bosses with cool names, all the saxophone solos you need, and also Jennifer Jason Leigh is there! Rounding out the episode we chat about Jose Ramon Larraz's Spanish-American slasher "Edge of the axe", which is short on plot but big on fun. Episode 147 of the Drunk in a Graveyard podcast is here and it's a more serious one this week, Robin and Scotty chat about two First Nations/indigenous films - the first one being Mohawk, written by Grady Hendrix (My Best Friend's Exorcism, Paperbacks from Hell) and co-written / directed by Ted Geoghegan (We Are Still Here), a film that stars Kaneihtiio Horn (The Wild Hunt, Hemlock Grove) & Eamon Farren (The Witcher) in a supernatural dark forest period piece that is brutal in its depictions of violence, madness, and colonialism. The second film is one that the graveyard has been waiting for and it's Jeff Barnaby's Blood Quantum, a Mi'kmaq First Nations zombie film that is all too appropriate and terrifying given the time of plague we currently find ourselves living in. Blood Quantum stars Michael Greyeyes (Are You Afraid of the Dark, True Detective, American Gods), Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Kiowa Gordan, & Stonehorse Lone Goeman. It was filmed on location in the Kahnawake Mohawk and Listuguj Mi'kmaq reserves in Quebec and the city of Campbellton in New Brunswick.

Episode 146 of the Drunk in a Graveyard podcast is here and this week, Robin and Scotty chat about Blumhouse's Fantasy Island which was described as "Cabin In The Woods meets Westworld" (yikes). Michael Rooker doing a Three Stooges impersonation was there, and there's talk about the best and worst fantasies you could have on an island that makes fantasies come true. Finishing up the episode, the crew chats about the funniest movie we didn't know we needed - a Canadian hidden gem called Draghoula about a Jewish drag queen vampire played by a guy who fronted a French-Canadian goth band Talamasca.

New release We Summon the Darkness starring Johnny Knoxville is up next and it's a heavy metal Satanic Panic romp that actually includes the "heavy metal" part, unlike other films that have explored this subject matter. Rounding out the show is DeadBall, a Japanese splatter gore comedy film about baseballs, babes in hot pants, some distinctly problematic elements, and then a boys in prison trope(??).

Scott and Robin had a long weekend filled with questionable cinema and are here to tell you all about it. First up is the 1960 vampire film Blood and Roses, one of many adaptations of the Carmilla story but this time around featuring vampires, explosions and vampires caught in explosions. Next up is Girls Club, a rape-revenge film from the early '80s that has an identity crisis but some effective messages. The final movie covered this week is Danzig's Verotika, an adaptation of his comics from the '90s directed by the Zig man himself.
