Birth (2004) - Horror Queers

Birth (2004)

Released on 09/25/2024

It's a 'Joe pick' for the second week of our Gay Icons & Anniversaries theme as the boys discuss Jonathan Glazer's modern classic Birth (2004). Starring Nicole Kidman as a woman grieving her dead husband, Birth was a lightning rod for controversy, but it's so much more than its bathtub scene and reincarnation plot. Plus: why Bright's casting prompted a complete script rewrite, ties to Rosemary's Baby, a superb Anne Heche, and the two minute long take that should have earned Kidman an Oscar nom. This is a gay masterpiece, people! References: > "Revisiting Jonathan Glazer’s Birth, 20 years on." Dazed > Stephen Gillespie. Revenants of Memory: An Analysis of Glazer’s Birth. Redux: Jennifer's Body (2009) feat. Mae Shults - Horror Queers

Redux: Jennifer's Body (2009) feat. Mae Shults

Released on 09/18/2024

Put away that Thai food and get ready to be lime green Jell-O because we're celebrating our 300th episode with a month-long theme of gay icons and anniversaries! And what better way to kick things off than by revisiting a film we covered in one of our earliest episodes? That's right, it's time to revisit Jennifer's Body (2009)! Tagging in for the conversation is Mae Shults, the co-host of the Lady Killers Podcast! Join us as we begin this super-sized, 3-hour episode (yes, really) by doing a proper deep dive into the film's production history (our format has changed a bit since we discussed it way back in 2019), including a lengthy conversation about the public shaming Megan Fox endured after she made some comments about Michael Bay. Plus: script leaks, "Twilight for boys," a lesson in polyamory, wetties, afterbirth prom dresses and so much more. When all is said and done, we can finally cross out Jennifer's Body! Questions? Hide your cat and don't say zombie because we're talking Colm McCarthy's 2016 adaptation of M.R.Carey's YA novel, The Girl With All The Gifts. Along for the ride is returning guest Carolyn Mauricette! Anchored by great performances from Glenn Close and newcomer Sennia Nanua, this dystopian "hungries" film is surprisingly complex, especially its dark/happy ending. Is there something in the water? We're back with another queer horror indie tackling conversion/aversion therapy. This time it's writer/director Quinn Armstrong's trilogy opener, The Exorcism of Saint Patrick (2024). C/W: suicide This one is doing its own thing, from great gore effects to beautiful exterior shots and even a fat gay teen main character (yay diverse representation!) Questions? Comments? Snark? Beetlejuice (1988) - Horror Queers

Beetlejuice (1988)

Released on 09/04/2024

To tie into Tim Burton's new sequel, we're revisiting the 1988 classic Beetlejuice. Trace has a funny backstory with the film, while Joe barely has a connection to it. We both agree, however, that the film is a creative triumph, with amazing characters and boundless background details that flesh out the world. Plus: multiple queer elements, the film's obsession with suicide, the animated cartoon and the musical adaptation, and why Delia is *the* best character. Reference: Tori Williams.
