“Doll, I think I want to buy a speakeasy.”Tailing a group of bootleggers to a cemetery, Jack Messer merely expects to find them burying booze in an unsuspecting grave. When the bust instead unearths the body of a young woman in the gangster’s grave, and the body of another prominent gangster, laying unattended not far off, Jack finds himself in the middle of two different murder investigations. Complicating matters is the presence of the Canary Cage, one of New Ophelia’s most prominent speakeasies, and a place for young women to be trained in the art of singing, and the Cotton Gin, a speakeasy that is not all it appears to be on the surface. With the help of his wife, tasked by her own office to investigate the Canary Cage, Jack must untangle the seemingly gordian’s knot of murder and booze before those he’s hunting finally silence the canary’s voice.
