Melinda Johnson, a young, African American music prodigy growing up in the Jim Crow South, lives with her mother, who is all too aware of the intricacies of life in the deep south. A cruel act of hatred cuts Melinda's life short and devastates her mother. Melinda returns as a ghost and discovers that her friend, Purvis, a young white boy whom everyone calls peculiar, can see ghosts. Together they embark on a journey, sometimes fraught with unspeakable danger, to discover why Melinda is earthbound. Along the way, she has a harrowing encounter with Granny Hobbs, the local witch. She decides it is more important to look after her grieving mother, but fate has a different path for her.
