The Kept Promise is the first book in the Witches of Waverly series, a cozy mystery series. It is a very enjoyable experience with all the twists and turns one expects to find on the back roads of the Appalachian Mountains. It captures the essence of the south-eastern Kentucky mountain region with a bit of folk lore thrown in for good measures. The description of life in a small town is spot on accurate. The Kept Promise is an experience with something for every reader: Romance, intrigue, corruption, mystery, murder, ghosts, and a lovely canine by the name of Patches. The story is slow to start because it takes time to introduce the characters, but good things come to those who wait. Once everything is in place, the story races like a car on moonshine for fuel. The unexpected turns, the humorous situations, and the real-life issues make this novel worth the price. The well developed characters pull the reader into life in Johnson County, Kentucky and the small town called Frey. This book has the bones which make a book series great. For a debut novel, Ms. Legel has made a bold plunge into the literary world. You can expect great things from her in the future. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL. Review by Terri Jordan P.S. The sequel Third Time's Charm will be out in October of 2017.
