Martin Polworth is returning to his hometown for a short visit, after many years away. Wandering around town he finds that while some places look the same, they have changed in many ways. In one particular place he witnesses an dreamlike event that is not recognisable to him. It shows a familiar place in a strange and unrecognisable light. Initially thinking it to be an hallucination, he becomes convinced otherwise by shadow or ghost like figures that appear for brief moments to torment him. Investigating further what might have happened in the past he meets Lucy Chalmers, amateur historian, ghost enthusiast, and redhead of a determined nature. She is someone, the only one, he can approach with this problem and they work together and grow closer as a consequence. As they draw toward solving the mystery they find that they have not been randomly chosen by the ghost. They are more connected to the event than they realise, and in a way that could be a threat to their growing relationship. Martin can choose to run, like he had from things in the past, or to stand and face the Shadows of Northwick.
