The three books about Hickory Stevens' adventure with The Eidolon have joined into one. The ancestry of Portla's townspeople starts to come to life despite the efforts of the Counsel Members, and Hickory begins learning the forbidden truth of Before through someone who lived there one thousand years ago. In “The Thousand Years Ghost” he meets The Eidolon and learns about one of the artifacts he found in the ground nearby, while his father changes their known world by using a mechanism from the time of Before to save the Elder Counselman’s granddaughter. In “Trees of Change,” he and his father have risen in status due to the new allowance to learn about Before. Hickory decides to find out what’s growing on the Mystery tree just below his new home in Canopy Fields, and The Eidolon helps him figure out how it’s happening. In “Journey to the Past,” Hickory goes on the first excursion to find knowledge of the time of Before and with a crew, he crosses the Bog’s End Bridge into the Further. He also manages to help the Eidolon after all of the help she has given him.
