When he'd been despatched to the faraway realm of Britainnia after slighting a minor relative of the Emperor, Gallus had not expected his punishment to be one of mind-numbing tedium... Then the orders came for him to lead an assault on the mysterious island of Mona Insulis and Gallus knew he'd not escaped the Emperor's wrath so cheaply. The more he learned of the foreboding island and the arcane religious sect that had once held dominion over its warrior inhabitants, the more he realised his own life and the lives of his brave legionnaires were to be as mere pawns in a macabre game of chance... Although tolerant of most religions, the Romans held a particular enmity for European druidism and especially the druidic sects of occupied Britain. In AD-60 they pursued the druidic priests to their island stronghold (modern day Anglesey) and conducted a campaign of eradication against all of the islands inhabitants. It took another eighteen years for the Roman army to return to the island fortress - this is the story of what they found waiting in residence...
