Helen is a young woman who is rebuilding her life after her divorce a few years previously. It is almost Christmas one year when she goes to work in her office job only to be told she is redundant. Her new life seems about to collapse as despite a massive effort she is unable to find another job. In desperation, she decides to accept a temporary reporting job offered to her from a long standing and very dear friend. Ethan asks her to try to find out what happened to cause the death of an MP Mark Thorne and so Helen sets off to the Scottish Borders to investigate the accident. Although her instincts tell her this is not a good idea, she ignores them with fateful consequences.
