Jarl Kenton is a Blade Dancer, a member of an elite group of swordsman dedicated to protecting the nation of Tamarun, the city of Alamar and the people of both from enemies both domestic and foreign. His patron, Lord Deni Pannel, has a reputation for evil. The terms of the patronage state that Jarl must reach the Third Circle before Mid-Summer next year or become one of Lord Pannel's servants. Jarl knows he will become a virtual slave if this happens and will do anything to escape that fate. Jarl is convinced that the only way to succeed is to take a dangerous, forbidden drug. Of ten people who have taken it, five died, three went insane, and one became incurably addicted and committed suicide. The last gained a level of bodily control that allowed him to become the founder of the Blade Dancers, over two hundred years ago. Since it's forbidden, he enlists the help of his best friend, Healer Georg Cheppet and plans to travel far away before hazarding what has become known as 'the Trial'. And Jarl's friend, beautiful S'ring Dancer Sini Purala, has come to Lord Pannel's attention? Together with another Healer, Jarl and Georg's childhood friend Alamber Rosant the four flee the city, heading for the Exalted Mountains and beyond. Will Jarl and his party survive the travels?
