Vincent meets a beautiful woman with raven-haired and dark-eyes in an old decaying city near the Rhine. They marry, and Ligeia impresses her husband with her immense knowledge of physical and mathematical sciences. She begins to also instruct her husband in areas of metaphysical and "forbidden" wisdom. Ligeia become seriously ill and struggles with her own mortality. After her death a grief stricken Vincent roams aimlessly until he settles in a ruined abbey in England. He soon weds, fair-haired and blue-eyed Lady Rowena Trevanion, and the two endure a loveless marriage until Vincent’s new bride begins to suffer fever and a worsening anxiety. Her condition deteriorates and she dies with her body wrapped for burial by servants. Vincent watches over the body sees signs of life from Rowena before relapsing into apparent death. As dawn breaks Vincent discovers Ligeia’s grandest, and darkest, secret.
