SOLITUDE

This novel observes the struggles and depression of a twenty-five-year-old man named Zion, who awakes one morning in a sudden state of numbness. He is the product of his past. He was unplanned, and due to his mother’s instability, was given up for adoption shortly after birth. He was taken in by a wealthy family, but could never escape the feeling of alienation within. In this family, he has a brother he adored until this brother almost died of a drug overdose and a sister he only recently began confiding in. Feeling unwanted by his biological mother and as nothing more than a trophy for his adoptive parents, in seventh grade Zion folded into himself. In high school he was basically non-existent, though internally he yearned for a connection to other people. In college he found himself, and afterwards met the girl of his dreams and began to wonder if she was the One. However, it is with her, that one morning he blinks his eyes open to the realization of nothingness; he feels nothing for her and nothing for anyone else in the world. Seeing no alternative, he secludes himself in his apartment, and for ten days becomes a slave to his memories.
