Solitude

Eddie Butcher is a shark that feeds off the bottom of Buffalo's criminal cesspool. He thinks of nothing but himself and is only motivated by that which can benefit him. He is an abuser, a womanizer, and a coward. He is also the last human being on a suddenly empty planet.Eddie awakens to find the streets of his city empty. Aside from the utter lack of life, the world is as it was the night before. There are no signs of an exodus, a plague, or a war of any kind. He is simply alone. Strange (and then terrifying) events conspire to force him to flee the city.Taking only what he can pack into his car, Eddie finds himself on a nightmare journey across a barren America, guided by an interior compass that seems constantly drawn to the west. As he travels, the world regresses around him, slowly spinning in the wrong direction. Accompanying this unraveling, Eddie also takes a journey backwards within himself, unlocking memories long buried in the humid root cellar of his deserted heart. Step by step, this broken, bitter man faces each new day, desperate to find a reprieve from his unwanted solitude.

About the Author

Joe Braun is the author of numerous books and short stories. He has won several awards and has many of his short stories published in magazines and books. His awards include the Xulon Press annual Christmas Contest, Fire by Nite short story contest, and Faithwriters.com Writer's Challenge. He lives in Leesburg, Georgia with his wife Shannon, and his two daughters. He is a proud member of Gillionville Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia where he serves as an Awana leader and a substitute Sunday school teacher.
