Episodes
142 - Basically (2014)
Not just a visual stylist, Ari Aster has a way with actors, and is skilled in finding compelling ways to capture them in their moment. I wonder if he has ever done any stage directing? I, for one, would love to see Ari Aster's "Death of a Salesman". That could be dope. Anyway, watch the short HERE!
141 - Munchausen (2013)
Ari Aster week part two is "Munchausen", a unique film that gives us an early look at Aster's developing visual sensibilities, as well as his fascination with family trauma. Can you tell I wrote thirteen of these in one night? Just watch the movie, silly goose! You can do that HERE!
140 - The Strange Thing About the Johnsons (2011)
HEADS UP: today's film deals with some real heavy subject matter, including sexual abuse. We wanted to make sure you know up front if that's an uncomfortable subject for you. We're going to do more of this in the future. That being said, this episode also inspired the first time in WWS history where we had a disagreement of interpretation so significant that we stopped recording mid-episode to both go back and watch the film again. You can watch the short HERE!
139 - Herman’s Cure All Tonic (2008)
Welcome to Spooktober Shorts week two! This week, we're taking a deep dive into the short films of horror golden boy Ari Aster, and we're starting all the way back in 2008 with "Herman's Cure All Tonic", the story of a fella named Herman... and his Cure All Tonic. Watch the short HERE!
138 - V/H/S/85 (2023) - A Shudder Original
Does the sixth installment of the popular found footage anthology franchise live up to the record-setting reputation of its two predecessors in the Shudder era? Let's all find out together!
137 - We Watch Stuff - September 2023
Took a minute to get it together but Michelle and JD are finally here with their series critics have called "I can't believe it's not Shudder!" What did they see this month? What's the scoop on their beef over "No One Will Save You"? Let's all find out together!
136 - heck. (2020)
"Skinamarink" is one of the most polarizing and talked about horror films of the year (we did two episodes on it), and "heck." is where it all began. Regardless of where Kyle Edward Ball goes from here, you can be sure most of the horror world will be watching! Watch the short HERE!
135 - Lights Out (2013)
The shortest of our selections for the entire month, David Sandberg's 2013 short accomplishes more in two and a half minutes than many features do with much more. Sandberg got the chance to adapt this to a feature in 2016, and has gone on to work in the Conjuring Universe as director of "Annabelle: Creation", as well as the DCEU as director of both "Shazam" films! Watch the short HERE!
134 - Terrifier (2011)
Art the Clown has rocketed to the front of the splatter pack as the sadistic torture-killer du jour, and this original short from director Damien Leone is every bit as brutal as the franchise it has become, with an grassroots demand theatrical run for "Terrifier 2" that earned $10 million at the domestic box office in October-November 2022!
Watch the short HERE!
133 - Oculus Chapter 3: The Man with the Plan (2006)
Mike Flanagan is one of the biggest names in horror in 2023, but back in 2006 he was taking his first steps into the genre with this short that went on to become his second feature, and arguably the film that kick-started his career! Watch the short HERE!
