Mystery writer Dori Blaine, living in a small town on the coast of Washington, comes home one night and discovers that she has been left a message similar to one found in her novels. At first, she thinks it is the work of a prankster. As other events from her novels start to unfold in her life, she learns about the existence of a cult called the Circle of Darkness. In order to learn more about the cult, Dori turns to an unlikely source. Shanna Carlson is a teenage amateur detective at a boarding school on the Maine coast. After reaching out to Dori, she learns that present and former students from her school have joined the Circle of Darkness, having believed in the message of a powerful life handed to them through their leader. She joins Dori as they both become determined to stop the Circle of Darkness from becoming complete and carrying out their evil plans of death and destruction.
