The story takes place in the present and concerns the members of a dysfunctional and strange family who reside in a creepy little stone cottage. The mother, Cora, runs a fleas market. Cora was never a good mother. She swore and drank and neglected her children. Her children left to make lives for themselves as soon as they could. And when after many years Cora, who was near death, requested that they return home to discuss something of grave importance, they returned reluctantly to find that very little had changed. Both the house and their mother were as terrible as they remembered. But if her children thought she was monstrous when she was alive, they would find that she was far worse when she was dead. Her spirit's revengefulness was merciless. Even members of her own family would not be spared if they dared to cross her. Cora had kept many secrets when she was alive. Now, the only person who knew her secrets was a beautiful and mysterious black woman who had come to set up her fortune teller's tent in Cora's flea market one season And she had some very surprising secrets of her own.
