The Grain in the Wood

Eucrates searched unsuccesfully for a sorcerer who could unlock the secrets of the dead. Now he is returning home aboard a Greek galley, his goal unattained. Pirate ships waited in ambush, poised to attack. Fierce fighting ensued. In despiration, he uttered words of power. His wooden javelin sprang to life, wielding itself with a will of its own. Too late he realised, as the wood split, each piece possessed a mind of its own. They became killing soldiers, battling tirelessly all enemies. His ship wasn't the last battlefield.
