Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is one of the great horror novels of all time. The inspiration is the thing that drew me to it at first. She was travelling through Europe and passing a mere 11 miles away from Frankenstein Castle and later traveling through the region of Geneva (Switzerland) when her future husband (Percy Shelley) and their traveling companion (Lord Byron) decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. After days of contemplation, Mary had a dream about a scientist who created life and was later horrified by what he had made. That story eventually morphed into the story of Frankenstein. Although her name didn’t even appear on the novel until it’s second edition, it was published anonymously in London when she was just 20, she was a trendsetter and inspiration for male and female authors alike.
