Philadelphia, 1967 – what begins as an ordinary day for Jessie O’Hara, a hospital cook, ends in an encounter with a vampire. When she doesn’t die, her vampire sire, Nathan, a mortician and resurrectionist (body snatcher), has to take her in hand and teach her the realities of her new “life.” She fights him and the changes in her body, but she must finally surrender to her new identity.She learns the art of embalming and reinvents herself as a scientist determined to discover a way to survive without killing. Wandering the streets at night, she also becomes something of a vigilante, skirting the edges of lower class Philadelphia society to protect the ladies of the evening. When tensions arise between the young vampires and the “Old Ones” and When a vampire Prophet surfaces and threatens them all, Jessie discovers things that change her world almost as much as that night she first met Nathan.
