There was a time when human beings, such as they were, lived in two-minute bursts, thinking only of the immediate consequence of each movement. When the brains of what we call people were little different from the mind of a lemur. Then something changed. Our brains gave us color television sets, rockets and the internet, but left a residue of something quite like awe, but much darker. I shall call it dread. Here are presented twenty tales about what we dread, not fear, and the miserable fates of those whose ability to predict the future haunts them, as well as those who have reached their hell. Some stories are fantastic. Others are frightfully ordinary. Some are entirely fictitious and some are true in all but slight details. Above all, what shall be demonstrated is that death and the breaking of the body are nothing compared to the hells our own minds and wills can drive us to.
