Fluke of Nature

After the fading of his best friend, Hugh cannot bring himself to accept she's gone and sets off on a journey to find her. His quest reveals hints of the bewildering true inner workings of the world he lives in, ruining the little understanding he thought he had.In this first book of his travels, Hugh forms a precarious alliance and breaks past the barrier separating known from unknown. He and his newfound companion must rely on the quickness of their wit and the strength of their steel to survive in the terrifying realm beyond. But as they struggle to fend off the myriad threats dwelling in this mysterious domain, they begin to realize that their every move is watched. Something supremely dangerous lurks at the edge of their perception: a hyperintelligent atrocity of the natural world capable of inconceivable, macabre acts. Will they prevail against this new peril, allowing them to continue onward, or will their human might prove insufficient to overcome its dubious intentions?
