"Another thing we don t understand," McPherson said, "is how Joseph got so much influence so quickly." He told them what Brenda Bolten had said about Joseph starting at the grass roots and working upward, and of his uniting the splinter religious groups to form a huge base of operations. "And we saw none of it coming." Monsignor McPherson again shook his head. "Now, the most important question. In your opinion, from what you ve seen and from what you ve learned, can this man be Jesus Christ reborn?" Sean looked at the pope, who sat stock still, studying him as if he were some organism under a microscope. Monsignor McPherson watched him anxiously. He swallowed. He thought of the chill that had run down his back when Joseph s gaze had fallen on him, seemingly singling him out of the audience at the revival meeting to speak directly to him. He remembered the nearly mesmerized audience. He thought of the little deaf girl and the dam with the cracks in it. "He could be," he said, and dropped his head. McPherson jumped up and paced the office. "You ve told us what you logically believe, my son," the Holy Father said gently. "Now tell us what your heart says." Sean looked up at the pope, the man who had been rumored to be sick and frail just a few months ago. Although the press had reported a dramatic recovery, speculation ran high that Peter II was weak. Sean saw a resolute man, concerned but not afraid. "I think he s evil."
