The Vampyre

"Remember your oath!"John Polidori's The Vampyre marks the first published vampire story in English, predating Dracula by nearly 80 years. The tale was conceived during the same literary gathering where Mary Shelley began Frankenstein in 1816. A fragment of the story was written by Lord Byron and later expanded upon by his personal physician, Dr. John William Polidori. The character of Lord Ruthven was inspired by Byron, Ruthven became a model for Dracula, and subsequently all other vampires in popular culture. This edition includes extracts from Polidori's diaries surrounding the writing of the story, a facsimile of Lord Byron's A Fragment, which Polidori used as a template for The Vampyre, and Byron's published letter denying his authorship.
