The Lesson

Twelve-year-old David Ruffin can hardly wait for summer. His father and stepmother are leaving for Europe, and he will be spending three whole months in Louisiana with his grandfather, who hunts the Ocheechee Swamp with his faithful hound Skeeter for alligator nests. Nothing could be more exciting for a boy on the cusp of manhood, and David is eager to get out on the water, catch a baby gator for his best friend, Ronnie, back home in New Jersey, and see if the unearthly stories he’s heard about the swamp and its inhabitants are true. But Grandpa knows there’s a terrible truth behind the local legends, and he warns David to treat the swamp with cau-tion and never venture into it alone. Convinced Grandpa is overreacting, and eager to prove himself, David looks for a chance to strike out on his own, little realizing that the swamp is more dangerous than he ever imagined. Can Da-vid survive long enough to be rescued by his grandfather, or will he learn that Grandpa was right at a terrible cost?
