“Raman!” A voice calls out to him at midnight. He does not hear it for he is asleep. His mother wakes him up and sends him out on his mission to the outback. He protests the time of the night and the manner in which the call comes; but his mother insists that it comes close to day break and from one of the cattlemen in whose company he often travels. He leaves home with his dog.In his memoir, Raman recalls the dangers that confront him along that journey, how he manages to overcome them and the role his dog plays in the drama. He also records his struggles as a barefoot lad growing up in the village of Edderton on the West Coast of the county of Berbice in colonial British Guiana in the 1930s and later, tending sheep and cattle, and his eventual triumph. His life takes a different path and his destiny changes after that journey. He leaves the grazing fields behind, attends high school, graduates and works for the government. He later retires and leaves for the United States of America where he begins a new life.
