He went to France in search of trains, even though there were those sensible voices who warned him to stay in Yorkshire. But it was only a railway adventure and, even if memories of a missing friend sometimes seemed to guide his journey, he never expected it to be more or less than that. He didn’t imagine that any dangers lay ahead, beyond those that must be anticipated when travelling in a foreign country. He didn’t think that he’d encounter a land of mystery and magic, and be left for ever trying to explain the inexplicable. And he couldn’t have imagined that his life would remain haunted ever after, changed irreversibly by events.
