This is a story about hardship, failure and tribalism in a world on the brink of war. Following many lost souls who muddle through their quests and follies, bouncing and rebounding against each other in strange and sometimes brutal fashion we get a pounding blood soaked plot. The Empire of Tiberia is the greatest political power in the known world who rules by the might of her swords. But one day from a far off land come men with guns. This is a fantasy novel but it's not a fairy tale. Neither is it a sprawling mega-series. Rather, it's single one-off story of revenge, adventure and a strange, inexplicable wizardry.Aidan Rich's debut novel is a bleak entry into the fantasy genre. As the story flits from the impoverished son of a senator to the trials faced by a lonely orphan lost on the road and then over to a rural land owner who has been enslaved by foreign invaders, a tapestry of desperation and nihilism begins to paint itself upon the pages. The themes appear, at times, more akin to writers like Cormac McCarthy or Chuck Palahniuk than with traditional stories of swords and sorcery.
