The Cask of Amontillado

The Cask of Amontillado

The Cask of Amontillado, short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in Godey’s Lady’s Book in November 1846. The narrator of this tale of horror is the aristocrat Montresor, who, having endured, as he claims, a thousand injuries at the hand of the connoisseur Fortunato, is finally driven by yet another insult to seek revenge. Amid the carnival celebrations Montresor encounters the drunken Fortunato and, on the pretext of seeking his judgment of a newly purchased cask of amontillado sherry, takes him to his palazzo.
