Days on the dig are grueling, and many do not survive. Dragged and stolen from lives and loved ones, the men and women of the Black March walk miles under the watchful eye of the sun, forced to dig for deadmen and their leaders in search of black roots. One such digger - a young man named Riess - survives where others die, digging during the days and defiant between them, waiting for death or escape. What he seeks finds him when he sees a child, a young girl, dragging color into life, both a warning and plea for help as she flees. Seeing his chance, he seizes it, and taking the young girl with him, escapes. But there is more to his story than escape and fleeing, and greater things wait for him in the Southern Continent. He and the child have played roles beyond retracting, and discovering the truth - as well as how to deal with it - will be painful. What was unearthed can no longer be buried again, and what comes cannot be stopped by the hands of man. It will take more. Much more.
