McDowell County North Carolina was the westernmost outpost prior to the Revolutionary War. With tragic battles between the pioneers and the Native Americans, death and destruction ripped apart the earliest of settlers. This county has suffered a devastating fire. The Great Flood of 1916 brought destruction to every corner of the county. It suffered a deadly influenza epidemic, various wars, the Great Depression, a serious industrial strike that left six dead, civil rights struggles, and killings over gold in the southern region. Spirits are shy in McDowell County so when they get the chance to reach from beyond the grave and communicate they do so without hesitation.
