In 1840, Rowena Holloway lost her husband and baby in one fateful night, and the sighting of a figure over her baby's cot is the only memory she has of that event. Five years later, following the death of her Aunt, Rowena travels from London to the North of England to attend the funeral. She finds herself in the small village of Grasmere in the Lake District, a place where ghostly superstitions are more authentic than she ever realised possible. A sceptical Rowena brushes off the notion of the paranormal, but as she becomes entangled in a mystery that has seen the deaths of several children in Grasmere, as well as the extinction of an entire family, she begins to believe in the world of vengeful spirits and deathly omens. She will have to unlock the secrets to the ghostly world that has now opened up to her, or she will end up as one of them. Someone is after her, and something has caught her attention.
