Fliss Elmsworth is forced to follow her husband to an archaeological dig in The Peak District when loan sharks threaten her and her three year old daughter Megan over an unpaid debt of her husband Bryn's. Too scared to go home, Fliss is forced to accept the hospitality of the farmer on whose land the dig is taking place. It is not long before the first finds are uncovered, but the 'bog body' that they find is certainly not three thousand years old - more like seven years - and D I Matt Piper is called to the dig to investigate the murder. When one of the team also suffers the 'triple death' used by the ancient Celts, Fliss feels she is being haunted by the victim of the first murder and wonders if the stone circle the team are investigating can be the source of the malign influence that seems to permeate the moors. She soon finds that her marriage disintegrating is the least of her worries.
