Her novels were typically characterized by their realistic portrayals of domestic life. She also wrote several works of historical fiction as well as ghost, horror, and supernatural stories. Her most notable works include Miss Marjoribanks (1866), Hester (1873), The Mystery of Mrs. Blencarrow (1890), Kirsteen (1890), Queen Eleanor and Fair Rosamund (1886), and the ghost/supernatural works The Open Door, A Beleaguered City, and The Library Window.
