It's 1953 and Willard Carlisle retires to his small hometown in Iowa. He's promised his second, much younger, wife he'll turn an old movie theater into a community playhouse for her. Finally, her dream of becoming a star is about to happen. But after the first dress rehearsal, she is murdered. The Rounders, six friends who meet weekly for coffee at a roadside cafe, hunt for the killer. Was he the victim's blackmailing ex-husband? Was he the theater director she planned to fire? Or was she killed by two brothers who were furious when she stole the lead role in the play from their sister? Using their diverse backgrounds and quirky personalities, the Rounders try to sort it out. But not until the dead woman's husband is viciously attacked, and a second person is murdered. Before it's over, one Rounder is held at gunpoint by the murderer, and a second unsuccessfully tries to rescue him. In the end, there's more bloodshed.
