Alexander Greystone, a London writer and professor who has the ability to see and converse with the dead, takes a holiday and travels to Hampshire where he has rented a cottage. Accompanied by his housekeeper, Alexander arrives at Hawthorne Cottage where the presence of a ghost becomes immediately apparent. His paranormal problems become compounded when he removes an old painting of the seven Hawthorne sisters from the attic and hangs it in its original position about the fireplace. Soon the girls, one by one, vanish from the painting and begin their ghostly wanderings. Alexander, suspecting that the sisters may have been murdered, sets out to discover why and by whom, but his efforts are soon hampered by the violent and murderous spirit of the oldest sister, who is harbouring a very dark secret.
