Miskatonic University Library in Arkham, Massachusetts was renowned for its collection of some of the most rare and arcane books ever assembled in the field of paranormal studies. For over two centuries it had been the repository of the research of its erudite scholars and the field notes and artifacts of its world spanning exploratory expeditions. It contained everything from ancient eldritch tomes recovered from crumbling European castles to cultish voodoo talismans fresh from cannibals of the South Seas islands. Most of the artifacts were sealed away from the undergraduates and casual browsers for fear that such knowledge, if it came into the wrong hands, would prove disastrous for both the user and the very structure of the University itself. To guard these holy and profane relics, a section of the library was set off that only the most trusted and loyal employees could enter, the Special Collections Department.Miss Connelly had worked for the library for almost ten years, rising to the position of Head of the Reference Department and assistant curator of the Special Collections Department. In all that time, the most exciting thing to happen to her had been thwarting the occasional book thief or chasing out students caught kissing in the stacks. She was quite happy with her job for the most part, though she did occasionally dream of Life's Great Adventure coming to sweep her away to exotic lands and high adventure. Little did she suspect that an adventure was going to be visited on her, right in the sanctuary of her own reading room. An adventure that would prove far more deadly than any she could fantasize about.
