Spawned by the brutality of untimely deaths, they crave that which was taken from them. They crave life. Marcelina Bajorek has spent her life in a blissfully naive bubble, until the night her grandmother shatters it with an unsettling deathbed confession; the mother she had always believed dead, is in fact alive and living in seclusion, purportedly in order to protect her. The immediate and dire need to discover the truth propels Marcelina and her long-term boyfriend, Jack Hayborough, from their peaceful life in Minneapolis, MN to her birth home in Poland during the tumultuous summer of 1980. The hopeful reunion descends into a labyrinth of family secrets and lies, followed by a torturous sequence of gruesome and haunting events that leave them broken and shattered. When, at last, they escape back to their home in Minneapolis, what returns with them is something beyond their comprehension, something malevolent and foul, with a base need to mutilate. The life they once knew has changed irreparably. Missing memories and the foreboding parting words from a friendly stranger plague Marcelina. Jack holds on to an unimaginable secret that eats away at his soul. If they can find a way to overcome their own demons, only one will stand in their way.
