The story of a young family who struggle to come to terms with the disappearance of their father on the eve of his conscription into the second world war. Forced to abandon their home in London for a small coastal community, they settle down with their father's aunt. The aunt's influence over the town appears to be limitless and as their relationship develops she begins to invest time teaching the youngest family member about the source of her remarkable abilities. An unsettling figure from the mother's past re-appears and tests the family's endurance and they find that, perhaps in their most desperate hour, their father has not abandoned them entirely.
